Annotated Bibliographies Criteria Curriculum Development Elementary Secondary Education Guidelines Library Acquisition Publishing Industry Textbook Evaluation Textbook Selection This report of a curriculum seminar at Washington State University is focused on the use of textbooks in both schools and libraries. Incorporated within Chapter 1 are topics concerning the textbook industry and how it works, a short discussion of the publishing structure, and information about the developmental costs of both curriculum and textbooks. Selected legal considerations of the textbook industry are the subjects for Chapter 2. Local textbook selection mechanisms are discussed in Chapter 3 and two models provide examples of procedures for systematic textbook selection and the establishment of selection criteria. Chapter 4 presents an abbreviated version of the rationale and approach by which language arts texts may be evaluated from kindergarten through grade 12. Sets of criteria by which to judge physical science textbooks for the junior high school and secondary schools as well as the first year of university courses are illustrated in Chapter 5. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the rationale and criteria for selecting and judging general mathematics textbooks and junior high school American History textbooks. The sample models of checklists or evaluation forms may be used or adapted for textbook analysis. (Author/VT) |
