| contents | When Do We Start? Library Continuing Education in Oregon: A Survey and Assessment of Educational Opportunities. Rogers, M. Maggie Burrell, Peggy Librarians Library Education Library Surveys Media Specialists Meetings Needs Assessment Professional Continuing Education Public Libraries Questionnaires School Libraries A three phase needs assessment was conducted in Oregon to ascertain how important library professionals and paraprofessionals believed continuing education was to their job performance, if their needs for continuing education were being met, and what direction they would like to see continuing education take in the future. During the first phase, 126 public and 126 school libraries were sent two copies of the same questionnaire to be completed by one professional and one paraprofessional staff member. A 30 percent response rate was received and the responses from school libraries and public libraries were analyzed separately. Selected responses from professionals and paraprofessionals also appear in the report in both descriptive and tabular form. The second and third phases involved meetings with voluntary public and school library groups, and discussions with representatives of training institutions. The meetings and discussions were held to elict responses to problem statements, prioritize needs, and ascertain how training institutions were responding to requests for continuing education. The report concludes with a proposal for a continuing library education plan for Oregon developed as a result of the needs assessment. A copy of the questionnaire, tabular data, and a bibliography are appended. (Author/JPF) |
