contents The Library-Heart of Reading. Cazet, Denys Developmental Reading Innovation Libraries Library Facilities Library Role Student Motivation The importance of the library in education today is such that one should deplore the mentality which places a higher priority on athletics than on the development of an adequate, to say nothing of an exciting and imaginative, library facility. An adequate library has a pot of coffee, a formalized library skills program, materials and equipment to meet curriculum needs, and staffing to write personalized curriculum for any teacher who needs it. The perfect library should have a sense of mystery and imagination about it. A student entering should be announced by an English doorman while an eight foot Chinese gong is sounded. Van Gogh walking the corridors, a tropical rain forest, an egg collection, the Louvre, and magical windows to the Old West, to rural America 100 years ago, and to a large city (all populated with real people) should all be included in the design. Accepting the premise of administrative priorities places limits on the imagination, but an adequate library should provide for the needs of the educational process and encourage children to keep their dreams.
