contents Procedures for Processing Requests for Computerized Literature Searches. College Libraries Databases Guidelines Information Retrieval Information Services Librarians Library Cooperation Library Networks Library Services Pilot Projects Public Libraries Reference Services Special Libraries The New York State Library is conducting two regional pilot programs to provide on-line information services to public, academic, and special library patrons. These procedures and guidelines were written for reference librarians in participating libraries who will act as the intermediaries between their patrons and the search analysts at the State Library who will do the actual searching. Topics covered in the guidelines are suitability of a topic for a computerized literature search, turnaround time for receipt of citations, reference interview, costs, format used to transmit search requests, and collection of statistics for the pilot program. Data bases that will be available to patrons for the program are MEDLARS, ERIC, BIOSIS Previews, Psychological Abstracts, and the New York Times Information Bank. Sample search request forms are included. The appendices contain brief overviews of the subject and scope of materials indexed in the six data bases, computerized literature searching, Boolean search logic, and an outline of Dewey Decimal Classification codes used by the State Library interlibrary loan network.
