contents A Quantitative Survey of Media Centers in Selected Southern Illinois Public Secondary Schools Within the Mount Vernon Program Service Team Region of the Illinois Office of Education. Novak, Paula McKinnis Audiovisual Aids Bibliographies Books Data Analysis Guidelines Learning Resources Centers Library Collections Literature Reviews Newspapers Periodicals Questionnaires Secondary Schools Surveys Tables (Data) This survey was undertaken to determine whether selected Southern Illinois secondary public school media centers possess the base quantitative resource collection recommended by the 1975 ALA/AECT guidelines. Data analysis reveals that less than 50% of the surveyed school media centers met the ALA/AECT guidelines for numbers of books, filmstrips, slides and transparencies, graphics, 16mm and super 8mm films and videotapes, super 8mm silent films, audio recordings, games and toys, models and sculpture, and specimens. Fifty percent of the surveyed media centers had holdings of pamphlets, periodicals, and newspapers at least equal to the recommended numbers, but very few met the guidelines for equipment. Data also indicate that the numbers of professional media staff and support staff at all centers are extremely low; and that a large percentage of these centers are below the level of the ALA quantitative guidelines. Recommendations are included, and appendices contain a bibliography and a sample questionnaire. (Author/MBR)
