contents Faculty Development: The "Haves" and the "Have-nots". Ciampa, Bartholomew J. College Faculty Cooperative Programs Coordinators Educational Finance Faculty Development Faculty Evaluation Professional Continuing Education Released Time Teacher Attitudes Teacher Improvement Workshops Implementation of a successful college faculty development program is discussed. A faculty development coordinator working in concert with the college's administration and the faculty is considered of prime importance. The characteristics of the person placed in such a role are outlined: (1) an effective teacher and scholar, a tenured associate or full professor of long standing in the institution; (2) a nonthreatening personal style; (3) candid and able to accomplish goals with minimal administrative direction; and (4) a person with a high level of credibility, willing to administer evaluation instruments and provide qualitative feedback to colleagues. The administration of development funds of varying amounts is considered with particular emphasis upon released time for individual research, grants for project support to improve instructional effectiveness, evaluation analysis, professional development library materials, professional retreats and travel, and consultant services. Suggestions are made also for those colleges with little or no development budget, emphasizing the importance of collegial support, teaming, sharing, and covering classes. (JD)
