The first part of the guide deals with developing skills in written composition, grammar and usage, spelling, vocabulary, speech, and library skills. The section on written composition provides numerous suggestions for effective writing, sample assignments and activities, and examples of effective writing; the other skills sections provide such aids as lists of grammar objectives and requirements, basic spelling and vocabulary lists, and suggestions for speech-making activities and library reference work. The second part of the guide discusses the reading of short stories and novels, mythology and the Bible, drama, and poetry. Numerous literary works are recommended for each of the categories, while specific activities, composition topics, and approaches to the works are suggested.
