Studies, articles, and reports concerning library services to American Indians living on reservations and in urban areas are reviewed and categorized into four areas: (1) general surveys of library services to American Indians which includes training programs, institutes and workshops, bookmobile services, resource collections, and libraries located on reservations; (2) non-survey descriptions of library services which examines the planning and implementation of programs, training of American Indian personnel, bookmobile services, station libraries, and role of federal funds in providing services and development of collections of American Indian materials; (3) programs designed to meet the information needs of American Indians which cites the National Indian Education Association Library Project Report as the only comprehensive survey of the information needs of American Indians; and (4) legislative and funding policies which includes the state and federal laws influencing library services to reservations. Recommendations for implementing an American Indian library services survey, plus a bibliography, conclude the paper. (DS)
