contents Alternatives and Implications for On-Line Searching: A Working Paper. Pralle, Ruth I. College Libraries Comparative Analysis Databases Expenditures Fees Interlibrary Loans Library Services Online Systems Personnel Tables (Data) Questions related to the expansion of online bibliographic searching at the University of Wisconsin-Stout are examined. A brief review of the literature on why libraries search online is followed by a discussion of the specific situation at Stout where the ERIC data base is the only online service currently used. The variety of online data bases leads to a comparative analysis of data base subject coverage. Rates charged by the major vendors--Lockheed, SDC, and BRS--for online searching, based on online connect time, off-line printing, telecommunications, rates for data bases searched (including discount), training personnel, search aids, hardware, and publicity, are analyzed. Software features offered by these vendors are reviewed, with a discussion of desirable system features, e.g., online aids, and output formats. An evaluation of vendor services is included, as well as an examination of search services using the resources of other libraries. The implications of online searching in terms of staffing, effect on interlibrary loan, and the question of charging patrons for the service are also considered. (MBR)
