Chase, Judith Wragg Background Black Culture Black History Black Studies Cataloging Development Information Centers Information Dissemination Museums Outreach Programs Planning Slavery The project described analyzed all of the resources in the Old Slave Mart Museum, the oldest museum of Black Heritage in the United States, and cataloged all its materials, including library components and its core collection of artifacts. The background and methodology for identifying and cataloging each item, improving storage and retrieval systems, and creating a 22,000 card catalog, are discussed. These resources, which are now organized to support school and academic programs with increased outreach planned through the card catalog publication, are described, as well as the most prestigious projects assisted through the outreach program. The results of this project are outlined, including the preservation of museum archival material, availability of valuable historical material, and the creation of a multimedia research center for the study of Afro-American heritage. The need for dependable fiscal support if the center is to be able to achieve its maximum utilization is indicated. A bibliography and list of consultants are included. (Author/MBR)
