contents A Study of Acquisitions and Processing Costs in a Small Public Library. Benson, Nancy Dollahite Administration Cost Effectiveness Costs Flow Charts Library Automation Library Networks Library Research Library Technical Processes Literature Reviews Public Libraries Records (Forms) Research Tables (Data) A study was conducted to determine whether the acquisitions and processing services available to Neill Public Library in Pullman as a cooperative member of the Washington Library Network would be more cost effective than in-house acquisitions and processing operations. The relevant literature is reviewed and descriptions of work studies in acquisitions, cataloging, and processing done over a period of several months at the library are provided, including a three-month check on the time required to move a book from its unpacking to the circulation shelf. Flow charts for the individual processors and a model processing flow chart were developed. Questions of the comparative quality of in-house and network processing were investigated through observation and interviews. Tables and graphs present information on the efficiency of acquisition and processing as it is done at Neill Library, its use of volunteers as a factor in keeping costs down, processing times for special requests and regular books, and times and costs per volume at the library and through the network. Results indicate lower cost and higher quality exist through the in-house system, and recommendations focus on improving in-house procedures rather than joining the network. A bibliography and several appendices are included. (MBR)
