contents A Comparison of Two Teaching Methodologies for a Course in Basic Reference. Final Report. Gothberg, Helen M. Bibliographies Comparative Analysis Course Evaluation Higher Education Intermode Differences Library Education Library Services Programed Instruction Reference Services Tables (Data) Teaching Methods Worksheets The purpose of the investigation was to develop and test an audio-tutorial program for a course in Basic Reference. The design of the investigation was a posttest-only-control group design with 63 students randomly assigned to either an audio-tutorial or a lecture group. Data were collected and analyzed using a t-test for two groups and four variables. No significant difference was found between students in the audio-tutorial and the lecture group in either learning ability or satisfaction with course methodology. However, students in the audio-tutorial group were found to be more satisfied with their performance in the course. Based on the findings of this study, the audio-tutorial program which was developed for this purpose may be considered a viable alternative to the lecture approach in teaching a course in Basic Reference. Appendices provide both the final examination and the evaluation questionnaire for the course. (Author/JD)
