It is presented in four major sections. Section I examines ways of defining ethnic groups, presents sample census tables showing the social characteristics of residents by race for the state and for individual counties of Colorado, and describes a telephone-directory activity to help librarians identify ethnic groups at the community level. Section II discusses sources of ethnic studies materials, different kinds of materials that are available, and the characteristics of those materials. Also included are techniques for analyzing materials in terms of reading level and soundness of content, along with a brief list of reference aids for recognizing bias. Part III contains a list of ideas for programs and ideas related to ethnic studies which librarians can implement in their schools. These include research projects, displays, poetry readings, field trips, and talent shows. Part IV provides an annotated bibliography of 72 print and nonprint ethnic studies materials for elementary and secondary school libraries. Over 70 ethnic groups are represented by the materials identified in the bibliography. (AV) |
