A brief overview of automation explains computer technology, hardware, and software. The role of computers in libraries is examined in terms of the history of computers and current evolving technology. An examination of microcomputers as a solution to library problems focuses on hardware and peripherals, including mass storage devices and man/machine interface devices. Systems software is discussed, with emphasis on program development aids, file management programs, operating systems, and applications. Criteria for system selection are identified, and library applications in the areas of acquisitions, cataloging, serials, circulation, interlibrary loan, reference and information services, and administration are explored. Based on these applications and requirements for space and personnel, guidelines are given for system selection and evaluation. The roles of the library, agency, federal government, and private sector in the application of minicomputers are discussed, as well as future trends.
