contents A Status Report on Levels of Library and Information Services of Utah Libraries. Wood, R. Kent Academic Libraries Bibliographies Information Services Library Role Library Services Literature Reviews Needs Program Descriptions Public Libraries School Libraries Special Libraries Tables (Data) While much progress has been made since the creation of the Utah State Library Commission more than two decades ago, much more remains to be done to improve library and information services in the state. There is a critical need in school media centers for professionally trained library personnel where non-professionals may now be substituting, and many school media programs are not rated high enough to receive sufficient funds for adequate programming. There is little effort to hire adequate library media supervisors at the district level. In the public libraries, there is a movement to provide services on a pay as you go basis, ignoring the right of free information access. Services are hampered by lack of county wide library systems. Public relations and awareness programs are needed, and standards for certification of public librarians are non-existent. Urban localities are receiving the best services while rural areas are lacking. Academic libraries require more funding, facility space, and professional personnel, to function as libraries and learning resource centers. Resource surveys of special libraries are needed. Improved indexing and cataloging practices are also needed to provide access and networking with other libraries, as well as improved bibliographic and information utilization instruction, and innovative practices to improve traditional and non-traditional library services.
