contents Reading Activities Guide for School and Community Involvement. Class Activities Community Education Elementary Education Reading Improvement Reading Interests School Community Relationship This activities guide was produced for use in the Illinois Right to Read Week and includes ideas for numerous activities for schools and the community to encourage reading. The many activities suggested as possibilities for schools include the following: having special reading days, encouraging reading at home, making a diorama of a scene from a favorite book, and creating a student book exchange area. Suggestions for community activities include asking the school board to recognize Illinois Right to Read Week, compiling a directory of services available for adults in need of basic skills training, sponsoring a story book parade, encouraging local merchants to feature book themes in their window displays, and asking the mayor to proclaim Right to Read Week. Among reading incentive programs suggested are bumper stickers, having well-known athletes encourage young people to read, holding school and library reading contests, and holding a young authors' conference.
