Bookmobiles Family Programs Library Role Low Income Groups Parent Participation Program Content Program Costs Program Descriptions Program Development Reading Improvement Reading Programs A family education program based principally upon reading is outlined in this paper. Following a discussion of the program's background and of proposals for its expansion, the paper describes booklets used in a campaign designed to help parents understand their role in their children's education. The following section outlines new methods of book distribution used in the program, including the use of school bookstore programs and paperback racks in day care centers, and discusses the cost of these methods. The final section covers the role of the American Reading Council in informing parents, librarians, educators, and the general public about how to operate the programs and about other programs that are successful in getting people to read.
