Participants were predominantly lay people with some representatives of the library/information science community. The conference was designed to focus public attention on the need for information services, on the problems of access to information, on the role of libraries in providing information, and to fix responsibility for making plans and taking appropriate action. Planned by the Citizens' Advisory Committee, consisting of lay delegates and librarians, the conference was coordinated by a Core Committee representing library associations and types of libraries. Pre-conference activities included surveys of public library users and non-users, regional meetings, and public forums. The Conference addressed the issues of library role; present and future technologies; responsibilities of the private sector and federal, regional, and local governments; library cooperation and networks; library resources; copyright; and relationships among users, libraries, and the private sector. Results were coordinated by a resolutions committee. Excerpts of speeches, subcommittee reports, and questionnaire results are appended. (CWM)
