Lamar Colleges Community Surveys Cultural Education Curriculum Development Curriculum Problems Educational Facilities Improvement Educational Needs Labor Market Needs Assessment Postsecondary Education Program Evaluation Program Improvement School Community Relationship School Surveys Small Colleges Surveys Two Year Colleges The University of Alaska (UAJ) consists of Juneau-Douglas Community College and Southeastern Senior College. Enrollment is predominantly part-time and largely concentrated in the community college. Personal interviews were conducted in May-June 1979 with 16 UAJ personnel and 50 citizens in six adjacent communities to identify local and University needs and to help develop recommendations for institutional improvement. Needs which interviewees identified included: programs and offerings in such fields as fisheries, forestry, and conservation of natural resources and energy; native programs to preserve and extend indigenous culture; preparatory courses for teaching, business, clerical, and engineering careers; more vigorous community planning and cooperation to strengthen UAJ's image; and aggressive student recruitment. Among 25 program and policy recommendations resulting from the interviews are the following: (1) reinforce commitment to high quality programs by evaluating teaching and through research activities; (2) develop a cooperative relationship with community agencies through conferences, vocational internships, and cultural programs; (3) survey local employment needs and opportunities to create a vocational education program consistent with the job environment; (4) expand the library as a resource center; and (5) improve campus services and facilities.
