Boisvert, Marianne American History Book Reviews Comparative Analysis Cost Effectiveness Efficiency Librarians Library Material Selection Scholarly Journals A study was undertaken to determine the extent to which "Choice" provides librarians with an adequate evaluation of the best books in the field of western American history in a reasonable amount of time. To assess the overall coverage, the titles of all the books reviewed in "Western Historical Quarterly" from 1970 to 1974 were searched in "Choice"; to determine the length of time between the publication of a book and its review, 40 titles of important works published between 1965 and 1971 were selected from the "Harvard Guide to American History" and searched in four scholarly journals as well as "Choice." Findings indicated that, although "Choice" was not as comprehensive in its coverage as "Western Historical Quarterly," it was more complete in reviewing the important works."Choice" also reviewed books sooner after publication than did the scholarly journals, and the quality of its reviews was comparable to that of the journals. Appendices include bibliographic citations for the titles used in the study, findings for each reviewing source arranged by reviewing criteria, and a list of references. (Athor/CMV) |
