Jackson, Patricia Ann Architectural Programing Building Design Design Requirements Facility Planning Furniture Design Interior Design Library Facilities Library Planning Lighting Design Masters Theses Structural Elements (Construction) When planning the interior of a library facility, the planning team of librarian, library consultant, architect, and interior design consultant must focus attention on the basic principles of interior design and the psychological needs of the user. Colors for an interior should be selected with careful regard to space, light, and emotional and physical effects. Furnishings should be taken into account in the preliminary planning stages of the library with consideration given to the functional requirements, comfort, and efficiency. For library interiors, special areas of concern include seating, study carrels, tables, card catalog cases, circulation desks, shelving, floors, and walls. Lighting and acoustics pose special problems in libraries because of the importance of eye comfort and reduced sound. Space planning requires the determination of present and future needs for housing the collection, equipment, staff, and users over the next 20 years. Although planning for the handicapped mostly involves entrance and movement within a facility, it should begin during the early design stages to help control costs and allow for proper space allocation.
