This report includes the checklist, which was designed for use by community members working with professional library personnel in deciding on the best alternative for library services in a particular locality, together with instructions for its completion and the evaluation of responses. A summary of the major findings of a national study of combined school public libraries conducted in the first phase is followed by a discussion of the major conclusion reached: it is unlikely that a community able to support or now supporting separate types of libraries will offer better school and public library service through a combined program, although the combined program presents a possible alternative to limited or non-existent services under certain conditions. Recommendations based on findings of the study conclude the report. (CMV) |
