- A Written Map Acquisition Policy: The Standardized Compared with Actual Map Library Practices. Mortensen, Susan Allred Depository Libraries Library Acquisition Library Collections Library Material Selection Library Surveys Maps Policy Questionnaires Surveys A standardized map policy was written based on information found in the literature for comparison with the methods which map libraries utilize in acquiring their collections. To determine the methods actually used by the field, a questionnaire was sent to 48 depository map libraries. Results substantiated the policy formulated for this study, that map librarians do use a tremendous variety of selection materials as described in the literature. Appendices include a description of the standardized map acquisition policy, the questionnaire instrument, a list of U.S. libraries with over 100,000 maps, and a list of libraries with between 50,000 and 100,000 maps.
