The first section contains a description of Portuguese immigration to the United States from 1511 to the present and notes changes in immigration laws. The second section presents descriptions of the different periods of Portuguese literature from 1198 to the present, and its influence on children's literature. It also contains reviews of the works of more than 30 authors, along with biographical notes. In addition, this section analyzes the impact of the Portuguese National Revolution of 1926 on writers of children's books. End notes provide information on publishers of such books in Portugal. The third section deals with children's literature in Brazil. It reviews more than 50 writers, providing biographical information as well as listings of their works. Mention is also made of illustrators, translators, and adaptors, and publishers who have influenced Portuguese books for children. The final section contains a survey of the existing collections of Portuguese-language children's books in three New England cities. It describes the "Casa de Saudade," the location of the largest collection of Portuguese-language books in the United States and concludes with a survey of radio stations, newspapers, bookstores, libraries, and businesses as to their contributions to children's culture.
