Radke, Barbara Berger, Mike Background Cataloging Computer Output Microfilm Databases Permuted Indexes Problems Program Evaluation Program Improvement Serials Union Catalogs Findings of this detailed analysis of the problems and errors present in the 1977 University of California Union List of Serials (UCULS-77) identify four major problem areas: (1) variations in campus cataloging practices (such as choice, form, and content of entry), the existence of both brief listed and fully cataloged titles, and the presence of both successive and latest entry cataloging records, prevented the consolidation of records from the same title; (2) problems in the translation of local campus machine-readable records into the UCULS MARC-like format resulted in the creation of entries that could not consolidate correctly due to either the presence of unspecified data or the elimination of pertinent data; (3) problems were identified in matching CONSER records with UCULS records, resulting in the incorrect consolidation of CONSER records and the faulty extraction of key words from CONSER entries; and (4) problems in the consolidation and Key-Word-Out-of-Context (KWOC) portions of the UCULS computer programs caused processing errors that prevented records from consolidating correctly, and adversely affected a user's ability to search the KWOC index efficiently.
