contents Thinking and Doing: Overcoming Sex-Role Stereotyping in Education. Stein, Dorothy And Others Career Awareness Class Activities Counselor Training Developmental Stages Extracurricular Activities Guides Instructional Materials Library Material Selection Program Guides Sex Role Sex Stereotypes Socialization Teacher Education Teacher Education Curriculum Workshops This manual outlines goals, and provides reading material, problem situations and suggested class activities for use in teacher education workshops concerned with overcoming sex role stereotyping in education. Materials for the first workshop session cover the general topic of sex-role stereotyping and its definition in terms of the traits, preferences and behaviors it implies. The remaining three topic areas for workshops are: students' choice of careers and jobs, students' participation in extra-curricular activities and elective courses, and the teacher's choice and use of curriculum materials. Included in the appendixes is material to be used with or in addition to the workshops. Appendix A is an introduction to the analysis of sex-role-relevant books, films and film strips. Its purpose is to illustrate the use of the criteria outlined in the first workshop for identifying non-sex-biased materials. Appendix B is a selection of responses to some of the classroom activities carried out by teachers participating in workshops conducted with materials in this manual. Appendix C deals with assessing the impact of the workshops and provides instruments for its evaluation. Appendix D deals in more detail with a particular aspect of the development of sex roles of interest to counselors: sex differences in behavioral problems and the development of sexual identity. Appendix E relates specifically to the school librarian's role in the elimination of sex-role stereotyping in education by providing additional information, resources and activities for individual or group use.
