contents An Inter-American Network for the Transmission of Bibliographic Information: Plans and Progress. Shepard, Marietta Daniels Cataloging Developing Nations Information Needs Information Networks Library Planning Library Services Program Descriptions Speeches Technological Advancement Technology Transfer This document summarizes the project of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Secretariat to coordinate its activities in the field of library and information services. In Latin America plans have been made based on cooperative activities and services whereby each library can have access to materials held in all libraries, as well as to cataloging information on new materials. Latin American libraries make use of bibliographic data banks in the United States to accomplish their plans; of special interest to the OAS is the availability of data on books in Spanish and Portuguese. To achieve "Universal Bibliographic Control" more attention must be given to standardizing and centralizing cataloging efforts in Latin America, and OAS technical cooperation is offered to member states in the form of experts experienced in creating and maintaining centralized cataloging services. The conclusion is a survey of the component parts of an Inter-American Network, and of the procedures necessary to achieve these goals. (Author/JEG)
