Bibliographies Community Characteristics Community Study County Libraries Demography History Library Facilities Library Research Library Services Statistical Data Use Studies This document analyzes the social and demographic characteristics of Pitkin County, Colorado (population 12,000) and the Pitkin County Library located in Aspen (24,000 volumes). The report contains statistics gathered from the 1978 Mid-Term U.S. Bureau Census of Pitkin County, as well as other statistics from local, state, and federal sources; the library portion provides an analysis of data from library user and non-user studies and surveys conducted between May 1977 and August 1978. Separate chapters cover the community, including aspects of transportation, communications, community agencies, commerce, and tourism; the library background; library facilities; library operations; library use studies; and library services and programs. The final chapter presents conclusions and recommendations for improving library services to the community. The impact of the tourist nature of the town, the existence of a highly transient working class, and the affluent nature of the community are discussed in relation to possible service and program implications for the library.
