contents A Model for Service to the Elderly by the Small/Medium Sized Public Library. Jeffries, Stephen R. Bibliographies Guidelines Library Role Library Services Models Needs Assessment Older Adults Public Libraries Resource Materials Responsibility Citing the American Library Association's 1964 statement of libraries' responsibilities to the aging, this paper presents a needs assessment of the elderly and suggests methods by which public libraries can attempt to meet some of these needs, e.g., barrier-free design, programs, materials, and services. The needs assessment of older users provides background material on 10 areas: marital status and living arrangements of older persons, economic security, work and retirement, health, education, dependency, nutrition, consumer fraud, recreation, and leisure. A guide for library service covers such topics as obtaining board support, surveying user needs, collecting and disseminating information, publicizing programs, implementing programs, monitoring and evaluating services, and dealing with possible problems. In addition to a bibliography for each chapter, a list of how-to resources provides sources of funding, a model core collection, specialized materials, additional bibliographic sources, and relevant organizations, associations, and agencies. A general bibliography is also included. (FM)
