contents Computers in Public Education Study. Computer Assisted Instruction Computer Managed Instruction Computers Data Processing Elementary Secondary Education Equipment Manufacturers Public Schools Surveys Use Studies This survey conducted for the National Institute of Education reports the use of computers in U.S. public schools in the areas of instructional computing, student accounting, management of educational resources, research, guidance, testing, and library applications. From a stratified random sample of 1800 schools in varying geographic areas and population centers, a response rate of 12.7 percent was obtained. This information, coupled with the manufacturer's own assessment of sales to the "educational market," formed the data for the study. Analyses of these data indicate programming languages used, sources of funding, types of computers, size of installation, costs, number of users, software used, attitudes toward computer usage, computer sales, and increased computer usage by state.
