  • Publishing Community Directories: A Practical Handbook. Marshall, Charles Duncan Community Information Services Costs Data Collection Directories Editing Guides Information Dissemination Labor Utilization Layout (Publications) Planning Addressed to volunteers, amateurs, and information professionals, this practical handbook illustrates procedures for producing various forms of printed directories that will fill community information needs, help to foster community participation and socialization, effectively promote and advertise the publishing organization, and that will be financially self-supporting. It offers guidelines for determining objectives, press run, scope and contents, editing policies, and methods of filing and data collection. The would-be publisher is also given advice on three broad areas of planning: (1) manpower, which includes data collection and advertising sales; (2) production, including number of pages, binding, use of color and graphics, page formats, matching sections, and providing library cataloging information and (3) costing, including editorial estimates and margins, balancing, market research, setting and printing expenses, delivery and advertising expenditures, staff payment, and projecting income. A generalized timetable outlines the stages of execution in producing a directory, and appendices provide detailed procedures corresponding to those stages, as well as a glossary of printing terms.
