Benton, Charles And Others Conference Reports Information Dissemination Information Needs Information Science Library Services Needs Assessment Policy Formation Speeches Remarks made by key speakers of the conference are presented, beginning with an introduction and identification of the five major themes by Charles Benton, Chairman of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, and of the conference. Marilyn Gell, Executive Director of the conference, described the services of the White House Conference Information Center and its four activity areas: information on demand, conference communications, state resolutions, and physically handicapped media. The first theme speaker, Bernard Ostry (Deputy Minister of Communications to the conference), commented on increasing international understanding and cooperation, and on Canada's views of international cooperation. Francis Keppel spoke on the conference theme of lifelong learning and outlined resolutions presented in the theme discussion guide. The third conference theme--library/information services for effectively governing our society--was addressed by Senator Major R. Owens. Observations on the National Library Act and resolutions to be placed before conference delegates were made by Dr. Thomas J. Galvin, Dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, and President of the American Library Association. (SW)
