| contents | Library and Information Services for Enhancing Lifelong Learning. A Discussion Guide. Molz, R. Kathleen Adult Education Federal Legislation Financial Support Government Role Information Needs Information Seeking Library Services Lifelong Learning Literacy National Programs Needs Assessment The two central themes of this discussion guide on the conference theme, Library and Information Services for Enhancing Lifelong Learning, relate to the roles of the library in supporting the educational programs of schools and universities, and in supporting adult education, continuing education, and lifelong learning. Following a general introduction, background information is presented in each of eight discussion-topic sections, which in turn are subheaded with sample discussion topics. The eight issues are concerned with (1) more effective administration of federally legislated programs supporting school, public, and academic libraries; (2) the roles and areas of cooperation between school and public libraries in meeting the needs of school-age children; (3) the implementation of a nationwide network to support the nation's educational goals; (4) how libraries can improve and enhance lifelong learning opportunities; (5) how libraries can promote literacy; (6) the dimensions of the state and federal roles in funding public libraries; (7) the desirability of special status for academic and research libraries with collections of regional and national significance; and (8) how local community, public school, and academic libraries can adapt to the changing social and technological environment. An abstract in Spanish and seven references are included. (SW) |
