- Library and Information Services for Improving Organizations and the Professions. A Discussion Guide. Feingold, Karen E. Business Government Role Information Needs Information Science Library Role Library Services Needs Assessment Nonprofit Organizations Policy Formation Professional Associations Professional Development This discussion guide on the conference theme, Library and Information Services for Improving Organizations and the Professions, focuses on the information needs of organizational and professional constituencies, including business. It is intended to serve as a guide for the discussion of issues raised in this theme area. Following a general introduction, background information is presented in each of the five discussion-topic sections, which in turn are subheaded with a variety of sample discussion alternatives. Types of organizations whose information needs are considered include product and service producers, e.g., businesses, utilities, farms, hospitals, and research organizations; mutual benefit associations, e.g., professional societies, labor unions, civic and philanthropic groups, advocacy groups, foundations (mostly nonprofit); and the professions, e.g., law, medicine, science, engineering, social work. While the information needs of special constituencies are treated in depth in Issue No. 3, the remaining sections address concerns of general interest to all three user groups. A 9-item bibliography and an abstract in Spanish are included. (Author/SW)
