- Library and Information Services for Meeting Personal Needs. A Discussion Guide. Schuman, Patricia Glass Community Information Services Individual Needs Information Needs Information Seeking Library Services Needs Assessment Policy Formation Resource Allocation Shared Services This discussion guide on the conference theme, Library and Information Services for Meeting Personal Needs, is intended to provide a starting point and a possible framework for discussion of the issues involved in the provision of information to meet needs ranging from basic facts about survival to advanced forms of intellectual self-realization, for users from widely varying backgrounds and age groups. Following a general introduction, background information is presented in each of five discussion-topic sections, which in turn are subheaded with a variety of sample discussion alternatives. The five issues are concerned with (1) whether library and information providers should offer new services to meet personal needs; (2) national policy issues that must be addressed if libraries and information services are to effectively meet personal needs; (3) how library and information services should be expanded or redesigned to meet the needs of special constituencies; (4) what legislative and funding initiatives are required to foster effective use of limited library resources; and (5) measures that will encourage maximum use of the nation's information resources. A summary in Spanish and a list of nine references are included. (SW)
