  • Library Catalogue Automation: Cost-Benefit Factors. Matthews, Fred W. Catalogs Comparative Analysis Cost Effectiveness Costs Economic Factors Library Automation Online Systems This paper describes an automated card catalog system, developed for the Dartmouth Regional Library in Nova Scotia, which uses records of selected fixed-length fields; it is proposed as a prototype for a system meeting the needs of a public library system with a collection size of about 100,000 items. The costs of operating a catalog system based on MARC-type records and one using selected fixed-length fields are compared, and the factors which contribute to the approximately ten times lower cost of the selected system are outlined. Included in the document are a table showing the content of the record, a figure giving the page format for the author and subject catalogs, and a systems flow chart. (Author/JD)
