Its founding and growth in the Oklahoma Territory was intertwined with that of black settlers--new arrivals in the territory, some of them former slaves who gathered to establish a farming community and built a higher education institution for their children. The money for land purchase was raised and a high school opened, later adding college-level departments. Personal recollections of the early days as well as documentation of the triumphs and difficulties of the college are presented in this book. Chapter topics include: the city of Langston; legislation and the college; the presidents; vice presidents and academic deans; the normal school; the high school department; enrollment; expenses; student organziations; the student strike of 1928 and other protests; the library; the struggle for accreditation; athletics; the academic disciplines; and trade and technical education.
