Disadvantaged Economically Disadvantaged Guides Instructional Materials Learning Resources Centers Library Education Library Instruction Questionnaires Rural Schools School Community Programs School Libraries This training manual documents planning and procedures employed in the development of a coordinated, comprehensive, year-long inservice library training program designed to stimulate and motivate the habit of library usage by students and teachers in the rural poverty area of Holmes County, Mississippi. Participants in the program included students, teachers, administrators, instructional aides, media aides, public librarians, college librarians, school library media specialists, and commmunity members. This manual provides outlines for each of the 40 sessions, emphasizing the planning aspects of the program, and especially the communications employed in establishing dates, times, goals, objectives, activities, performance indicators, and publicity. Aspects of the library media program addressed in individual sessions include the roles of principals, teachers, aides, and parent volunteers; the role of the media program in the school curriculum; materials selection and production, including appropriate materials for exceptional children; school media center/public library cooperation; library skills for students, aides, and teachers; resources for teachers; student career awareness; and equipment operation. Appendices provide a discussion of evaluation procedures and findings, as well as samples of publicity, promotion ideas, and awards, and lists of supplementary materials and consultants. (Author/RAA)
