- A Study of a Data Processing System for the Contemporary Film Library. Philipson, W. D. Data Processing Film Libraries Higher Education Instructional Films Library Automation Management Information Systems This overview of the use of computers in educational film library management provides brief discussions of some current issues and problems, descriptions of seven operating systems, and a case study of the selection of a computer system for the facility at the University of Minnesota. Described are basic computer systems; advantages of their use for film libraries; and the integration of computers for management, systems analysis, programming, machine operation, and clerical/administratlve functions. A brief description of seven large educational film library automated systems is offered, five of which are members of the Consortium of University Film Centers. These systems include the Scholastic Instructional Materials System (developed by the Burroughs Corporation), the Singer System Ten, The Shell Oil Company Film Library, the Middle Iowa Educational Cooperative Consortium, and university film libraries at the University of Iowa, the University of Illinois, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota. These systems are reviewed and a special case study is reported for the system developed at the University of Minnesota. Procedures used to acquire, develop, and operate the system are highlighted, with cost facts and administrative relationships external to the library specified. (RAO)
