| contents | The Ownership and Use of Experimental Films in Public Libraries of New York State. Palmer, Joseph W. Films Library Circulation Library Collections Library Materials Library Services Library Surveys Public Libraries Publicity Use Studies A survey of the ownership and use of experimental films by 22 libraries in New York State concludes that the keys to increased access and use of these films are substantial state or regional backup collections available at low or no cost to individual systems; provision of promotional and educational materials to advertise these works to patrons and librarians; and an outreach program to the potential users in the community. Strong collections of experimental films do exist at New York City, Nassau County, Brooklyn, Rochester, and Chautauqua-Catteraugus; however, the majority of collections outside the metropolitan areas are weak. Circulation varies according to type of film, the community served, and the promotional activities of the owning library. While circulation outside of the urban areas tends to be low, statistics on one upstate system suggest audiences can be developed for experimental films even in highly rural areas if the film administrator is knowledgeable about the genre and is dedicated to their promotion. The study analyzes film catalogs, circulation figures, and the interviews with local administrators, and cites arguments for and objections to experimental films in public libraries. Data gathered for the study are provided throughout the text and in four appendices. (Author/RAA) |
