contents Continuing Education Services. How Public Libraries Can Expand Educational Horizons for All Americans. A Background Paper for the White House Conference on Library and Information Services. Layne, Elizabeth N. Adult Education Adult Learning Adult Programs Adult Students Community Information Services Educational Counseling Information Services Library Services Public Libraries Reference Services This booklet, prepared as background information for the White House Conference, describes recent developments in providing learners' advisory services to adults beyond traditional school and college age. In particular, it focuses on the Woodbridge, New Jersey, Public Library, one of nine participating libraries in an Adult Independent Learner Project which provided in depth advisory and information support characterized by a close working relationship between the learner and the libraries. Training workshops for librarians stressed four major subject areas: (1) understanding the adult learner, (2) decision making and educational planning, (3) interviewing techniques, and (4) guiding the learner in the use of study materials. A principal obstacle to the success of this type program has been librarian resistance, which is being countered through special training, time, and dedication. Other more traditional programs, e.g., correspondence courses, external degree programs and proficiency examinations, are being used in many locations to reach the adult learner. The future of these services is a matter of professional assessment, adaptability, and confidence, but most of all, of priorities on the part of libraries and librarians. (RAA)
