contents Strengthening the Library Profession. New Approaches Are Needed in the Recruiting and Training of America's Future Librarians. A Background Paper for the White House Conference on Library and Information Services. Daniels, Wes And Others Librarians Library Education Library Schools Library Science Professional Development Professional Education Public Libraries Standards This booklet, one of a series of background information papers for the White House Conference, outlines and discusses the important issues of professionalism facing libraries, librarians, and library schools. Public librarians are being asked to assume new roles and perform new tasks for which they are increasingly unable to adequately and effectively meet the expectations of the library and their local communities. This gap is due primarily to a very conservative library establishment. Other contributing factors are lack of library influence in library education, the negative image of the library profession, and the mediocrity of many who enter the library field. A brief description of some of the new roles contemporary librarians are being asked to undertake and a review of the process whereby librarians are formally educated is followed by a discussion of new initiatives that are needed to provide library training which will be responsive to the needs of today and tomorrow. Major efforts are needed to fund and implement innovative progams on the part of all concerned; library organizations, public libraries, librarians, and the communities they serve. A short bibliography is appended. (Author/RAA)
