contents Etude Comparative des Systemes de Reperage de l'Information Bibliographique en Mode Dialogue. Rapports de Recherche, No. 13 (Comparative Study of Systems for the Online Retrieval of Bibliographic Information. Research Report No. 13). Perusse, Lyse Comparative Analysis Cost Effectiveness Databases Foreign Countries Information Retrieval Information Services Library Services Online Systems Reference Services Search Strategies Tables (Data) This study, which was conducted at the University of Quebec over a period of six months, focuses on four systems for online information retrieval that are available to users at the university and provide access to some of the same databases: BRS (Bibliographic Retrieval Services Inc.), CAN/OLE (Canadian On-Line Inquiry), Lockheed DIALOG, and SDC/ORBIT. The criteria used for comparison are grouped in four categories--costs, system features, databases offered, and user services. An analysis of the data collected indicates significant differences in the systems in terms of costs and response time, and it is concluded that access to a large number of databases is less important than the availability of databases that can meet the specific information needs of the particular library. A case is made for the importance of effective management of the rapidly increasing number of databases being made available, and for the redefinition of the roles and objectives of libraries as participants in the process of information dissemination. A list of 20 research reports in the area of communications is attached. (BBM)
