| contents | Working Conditions in Children's Libraries: Analysis of a Research Project. Bruyns, R. A. C. Children Foreign Countries Job Analysis Job Training Librarians Library Collections Library Services Library Standards Library Surveys Motivation Opinions Public Libraries Questionnaires were submitted to a number of Dutch public libraries where books are loaned to children to gather data for an investigation of the nature and scope of tasks in the children's library and changes that have taken place since the introduction of the free library system in 1975. Also examined were the duties of children's librarians and their opinions and underlying expectations of their work. The questionnaire was divided into four parts: (1) questions requesting statistical information to be answered by the directors; (2) questions on the tasks in children's departments to be answered by the department heads; (3) questions to be answered by the department heads on the relationship between their training and functions; and (4) questions to be answered by staff on their duties in children's departments. Detailed data reported and discussed include the numbers of young borrowers and size of children's collections; time spent on specified tasks and the relationships between public and school libraries; opinions and motivations of children's library department heads and their level of professional preparation; and the tasks and training of full- and part-time staff. Comments on the findings and the data close the report. (RAA) |
