The guidelines suggest a commitment to goals, a desired direction of development, and practical methods of procedure. The section on personnel discusses management of school library media programs, selection of leadership positions for geographic region and school systems, competencies required of school library media specialists, and the development of media center staffs. Under Selection and Acquisition of Materials, guidelines are presented for the development of a collection of print and audiovisual materials, systematic collection building procedures, provisions for specific types of materials, the apportioning by subject areas, and the proper and full use of the school library media center. Provisions for housing the collection which are described include internal design arrangements, furnishings, and equipment. The focus is on materials-based learning for which schools must determine their own readiness. The outlines of the necessary staff, materials, and facilities are intended for use by school library media centers to ascertain their level of development and project their goals for the future.
