| contents | A Challenge to Change: Necessary Changes in the Library Classification System for the Chicago Public Schools. Williams, Florence M. Cataloging Classification Dewey Decimal Classification Feasibility Studies Inservice Education Library Instruction Library Materials Library of Congress Classification Media Specialists Organizational Change Public Schools School Libraries This report addresses the feasibility of changing the classification of library materials in the Chicago Public School libraries from the Dewey Decimal classification system (DDC) to the Library of Congress system (LC), thus patterning the city school libraries after the Chicago Public Library and strengthening the existing close relationship between the two systems. The proposed plan considers the size, organizational pattern, and training to perform the new tasks for lay and professional personnel of the public schools, as well as the necessary finances. Recommendations are that (1) inservice sessions in library skills for professionals and paraprofessionals be instituted, (2) the school curriculum be adjusted to introduce new teaching units, and (3) the library collections be reclassified to follow the new changes in instruction. The study includes definitions of specialized terms, a literature review, a description of the research methodology, anticipated results, a summmary, references noted, and a bibliography. Appendices contain a student handbook on the use of LC, an inservice training program plan, a program evaluation form, and a description of possible minicourses in library skills. (FM) |
