  • The Council of Research and Academic Libraries: An Example of Interlibrary Cooperation. Cain, Mark E. Academic Libraries Consortia Cooperative Programs Coordination Interlibrary Loans Library Cooperation Library Networks Library Planning Public Libraries Research Libraries Special Libraries This paper examines the history, organization, and activities of the Council of Research and Academic Libraries, a multitype library cooperative composed of academic, public and special libraries and located in San Antonio, Texas. The consortium's history is traced from the events preceding and leading to its founding in 1966 to the present time, and the organizational structure of CORAL together with its subgroups and major activities are described--production of union catalogs, cooperative circulation/interlibrary loan, cooperative storage, and cooperative acquisition. These areas are evaluated primarily through information obtained by personal interview to determine the effectiveness of CORAL in fulfilling the library needs of the member institutions. The present success of the consortium is acknowledged; however, a number of recommendations for improvement are offered. A sample questionnaire, a summary of questionnaire responses, and cooperative circulation statistics are appended, and there is a bibliography of 29 citations. (Author/RAA)
