contents Bibliographic Instruction Handbook. Academic Libraries College Libraries Higher Education Library Instruction Library Research Library Skills Program Development Undergraduate Students Based on the ACRL Guidelines for Bibliographic Instruction, this handbook is intended not only to provide guidance in the development of instruction programs, but also to stimulate discussion within the profession. It consists of the guidelines, five model statements and checklists, a glossary, and a pathfinder. The guidelines present generally agreed upon essential elements and objectives for bibliographic instruction programs. The model statements, formulated in the areas of needs assessment, administration, program timetables, objectives, and modes of instruction, are only intended to illustrate and aid in the implementation of the guidelines. Local factors should be allowed to play a controlling role in guideline implementation. Needs assessment includes the academic community--groups and programs; assessment of need for bibliographic instruction; the academic library--existing resources and programs; and reporting and using data. Administrative considerations cover staffing, staff development, budget, facilities, equipment and materials, and organization. Program timetable models are developed through three planning and activity levels to produce a mature program. The objectives model presents a series of general and specific enabling and terminal objectives; modes of instruction are treated using a system of pro and con arguments. (RAA)
