contents Citizen Awareness and Use of Racine Public Library Facilities Pilot Study--District 10, Ward 1. Bertelsen, Dianne C. Community Attitudes Library Circulation Library Services Library Surveys Public Libraries Public Opinion Use Studies Conducted in 1979 to discover the extent of library use by Racine area residents, to determine their awareness of library services available, and to form conclusions and recommendations to help increase neighborhood use of the branch library, this study randomly sampled 179 residences using a questionnaire composed of 25 questions. The survey, in addition to providing a population breakdown, found that 73 percent of those interviewed had used the library in the previous year, 65 percent at least once during the year, and 35 percent at least once per month. Most respondents said they used the library to borrow materials, ask for information on a specific topic, or use the copy machine. Only nine percent of the respondents were aware that all of the services mentioned in the questionnaire were available at the Racine Public Library, and over 50 percent were unaware that the library offered services to the handicapped. In addition to a description of the survey method and an analysis of the data gathered, this report contains conclusions and recommendations, a sample questionnaire, a map of Racine wards and districts, relevant letters, and a list of background readings.
