contents "Sports Splash" 1980. A Librarian's Planning Handbook. Thomas, James L. Thomas, Carol H. Athletics Elementary School Students Librarians Library Materials Preschool Children Public Libraries Publicity Questionnaires Reading Materials Recreational Reading Summer Programs Volunteers Young Children This handbook has been developed as an aid for librarians in planning summer 1980 reading programs on a sports theme for children from preschool through the elementary years. The program encourages children to visit the library, become familiar with its resources, and promote reading and enjoyment of books. The handbook is complemented by materials from the Texas State Library--posters, reading logs, bookmarks, and certificates--which provide project ideas related to the theme. The introductory sections are designed to acquaint the user with the general format of the reading program, setting goals appropriate to the audience's needs and characteristics, and developing scheduling, record keeping, volunteer support activity, and program structure. The major portion of the handbook comprises ideas and activities which may be incorporated into the reading program, as well as lists of books (with grade level) on individual sports. A short discussion on how to complete and evaluate the program, an evaluation form, a bibliography of nonfiction on sports, and a list of possible sources of free films conclude the handbook.
